Lake Wakatipu does not sit still. Every 25 minutes or so its surface rises and falls roughly 100 millimetres at Queenstown Bay, a standing wave called a seiche that Māori tradition explains as the heartbeat of Matau, the giant sleeping beneath the water. The Ngāi Tahu name, Whakatipu Waimāori, attaches to a lake that is 80 kilometres long, up to 380 metres deep, and bent into a lightning-bolt shape by ice rather than by any river. That shape is the work of a glacier that ground south through the Southern Alps during the last ice ages, gouging a trough whose floor lies well below sea level. The mountains left behind — the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Walter Peak — rise almost directly from the shoreline, which is why a lake wakatipu scenic cruise reads less like a boat trip and more like a slow traverse of a fjord that never reached the sea. Schist cliffs drop into water so clear and cold that visibility often exceeds ten metres. Settlement followed gold. Steamers carried miners, mail, sheep and timber to stations with no land access at all. The TSS Earnslaw, launched in 1912 at Kingston and still coal-fired today, is the last of that working fleet — a twin-screw steamship whose stokers shovel by hand while passengers watch the engine room from an open gallery. Walter Peak Station, on the far shore, remains reachable most easily by water, which is why the steamship and the farm have been linked for more than a century. The high-country runs that ring the lake tell the second half of the story. Rees and von Tunzelmann took up land here in 1860, running merino sheep across terrain that swallows fences and stock alike. Their descendants' paddocks are still visible from the deck: green terraces stacked against grey rock, willow lines marking old creek beds. Today the lake carries a mixed fleet. Purpose-built catamarans run short circuits of the bay and the Kelvin Peninsula; the Earnslaw makes the longer crossing to Walter Peak; jet boats peel off into the Shotover and Kawarau canyons. What unites them is the vantage. From the middle of the water, Queenstown shrinks to a thin band of roofs beneath 2,300-metre peaks, and the scale of the basin becomes legible in a way it never is from shore. Light does much of the work. In the clear air of the Otago interior the ranges shift from blue to bronze within an hour, and the lake mirrors them almost perfectly on still mornings.
